Writing, reading, translating, and teaching as forms of exile

Abstract:
The number of Mexican writers living abroad has never been as high as it is now. We can find them in several countries, although preferred places have definitely shifted from Paris to American cities, and from attics to humanities departments. But then, as Felipe Fernandez Armesto has argued, the United States has always been a Hispanic nation and is increasingly becoming a Latin American country. Living in Japan implies a very different experience for a Mexican writer, even in an age when the internet connects us instantly and globally. It has changed my practice of writing, my ideas on translation, and surely my identity.
Bio
Aurelio Asiain (1960) is a Mexican poet, essayist, critic, and translator living in Japan since 2002. For fifteen years editor in chief of the literary monthly magazine Vuelta, directed by Nobel Prize winner Octavio Paz, after Paz’ death Asiain founded a literary quarterly: Paréntesis (1999-2002). From 2002 to 2007 he served as cultural attaché of the Embassy of Mexico in Tokyo. Since then he has been a professor at Kansai Gaidai University. His 17 books include poetry, essays, translations, anthologies. Most recent are Japón en Octavio Paz and a Spanish version of the Hyakunin-isshu: Centena de cien poetas.

The story of a domestic helper who works for a celebrity and receives a sudden visit by her estranged daughter, Jéssica. During her stay in São Paulo to take university entrance exams, Jéssica shakes up the status quo at her mother’s workplace and breaks social barriers along the way. This comedy reflects the momentous changes in contemporary Brazil. It sold in more than 22 countries across the world, making Director Anna Muylaert one of the most successful woman filmmakers in Brazil. She will join us via videoconference from Brazil to discuss her work and what it means to be a woman filmmaker in her country today.

In collaboration with the Consulate General of Peru in Hong Kong and Macao, the Main Library is pleased to present Peru’s Memory: 1890 – 1950 photo exhibition at the 2nd Floor Atrium/Exhibition Area of the Main Library from 13– 30 November 2017.
Thirty-three photographs have been selected from the “Fotografia Memoria del Perú” by photographers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (1890-1950) capturing the history and everyday life in Peru, including the best works of the “Golden Age of Peruvian Photography” 1.
“Thanks to these images and to many others like those, Peru, as we know it today, began to emerge before itself as an apprehensible reality. The natural wonders of its territory, the great monuments of its pre-Columbian past, the ancestral customs interwoven with the modernizing aspirations, the advance of the capitalist economy, and the social conflicts of a national society in formation.
Peru’s Memory: 1890 – 1950 photos allows us to revive some of the construction processes and to value the talent of masters of the lens such as Max T. Vargas, Martin Chambi, Carlos and Miguel Vargas, Juan Manuel Figueroa Aznar, Sebastian Rodriguez, Baldomero Alejos, and Walter 0. Runcie, to mention only some of the most conspicuous in this selection.”1

The SMLC Awards Ceremony took place on October 23rd. Among the awardees for their academic excellence and dedication to their studies, several students from the Spanish Programme received monetary prizes from the Consulate of Spain (3 prizes), or scholarships for summer courses in the following Spanish universities: Universidad de Alicante (1 prize), Universidad de Cádiz (2 prizes), Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (campus Toledo) (1 prize) y Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) – Cuenca (1 prize).
In addition to the summer course prizes, SMLC handed out 5 Centenary Scholarship fund awards. Michelle Liu Wong, a student of the Spanish Programme and one of the MCs at the ceremony, was one of the recipients.

El 23 de octubre tuvo lugar la ceremonia de entrega de premios de SMLC. Entre los premiados por su excelencia académica y dedicación al estudio se encontraban varios estudiantes del programa de español que recibieron premios en metálico por parte del Consulado General de España en Hong Kong (3 premios) o becas para un curso de verano por parte de las siguientes universidades españolas: Universidad de Alicante (1 premio), Universidad de Cádiz (2 premios), Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (campus Toledo) (1 premio) y Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) – Cuenca (1 premio).

As every November, the Argentina Food Wine and Culture Festival is back with a wide variety of events promoted by the Consulate General of the Argentine Republic, with the support of many other companies and institutions such as The University of Hong Kong, which will host the screening the Argentine film Jauja an award-winning drama directed by Lisandro Alonso and starring Viggo Mortensen and Ghita Nørby.
Popcorn, wine, and traditional Argentine pastries will be offered before the screening.

The members of the Spanish Programme are happy to announce that Susana Pastor Cesteros (PhD, Universidad de Alicante), founder and director of the Research Group on Second Language Acquisition (ACQUA) will give the talk Lingüística aplicada al aprendizaje de segundas lenguas: situación actual, líneas de investigación y retos de futuro (Applied Linguistics in Second Language Teaching: Current Situation, Research Paths, and Future Challenges) on April 26, Wednesday, from 17:00 to 18:30, in CPD 4.34 Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU.
The talk will be given in Spanish.
On the 10th and the 11th of March of 2017, for the fifth year in a row, the Spanish Teacher Training Conference of Hong Kong, organised by the Spanish Programme together with the Edinumen publishing house, and hosted by HKU, attracted more than a hundred twenty people with four plenary lectures and eighteen workshops given by academics, experts and educators from all over the world.
The repeated success of this event encourages us to continue celebrating it in the future.
